Reflective Evaluation

For this project, the goal was to create a science based, 3 minute animation. This meant doing all the same things like in the previous assignments, such as researching, brainstorming, script writing etc. Only this time, we will have a fully rendered, 3d animation at the end. As this is more in depth, it meant really getting to understand maya and its supporting programs. Also, taking our details further into thinking about textures, lighting, ambience and style. For our script, if we required a voice over, we have to find a professional to give the script the edge its needs. This goes the same for the soundtrack. Anything we used had to be royalty-free and accredited.  Time management would be the key to succeed in this project.

Throughout the whole of this project, there has been a lot of ups and downs. Starting with a lot of highs, I found myself getting work done quite quickly and making a lot of process.  However, due to the usual situation that had risen, teaching moved to a online bases. Learning from home is not a problem, but it seemed that managing the software on my computer became increasingly difficult. Simple tasks ended up taking a lot longer than normal, and there was holes in my knowledge when it came to some of the required animations. When it came to placing my scenes together there was a lot of discrepancies, and my soundtrack did not seem to match the timing.,  Teaching staff was always online to help with problems which was nice, but it's seemed that the uncertainty of the climate and the difficulties with rendering/animating was taking quite a toll. There was days when I was thoroughly enjoying working, and others where even sitting at the computer desk was difficult, even though I always managed to. I found myself feeling quite lonely and frustrated at time, meaning work was even slower. Regardless of this, what was most important was people's safety and well being, and will continue to stay at home if needed.

If I was to do this project again, I would choose a different subject and make a simpler animation bases. My designs was much too complicated, and I had so much to make that it ate quite quickly into my time.  Trying to create a rig for the Rubik twist didn't work, but this did problem was easy to overcome. What I enjoyed the most and what I thought went the best was my animatic. It's quite detailed, and can stand as a 2d animation on its own. Plus, it was a great aid in directing what I made of my 3D playblasting. For the next coming months, I plan to have a short rest so to build back up my mentality. But then, I want to start learning at home to improve both on Maya and digital painting. This will make sure I don't get rusty before returning to university, and will make me much more prepared for the second year.

I have not placed the animatic and the animation together, this is due to differences with the 3D timing and the soundtrack. Over the summer, I may look in to finishing this animation, but there is currently very mixed emotions about this.

Fantastic Voyage - Video Scenes Part 1

Currently, this is all the scenes place together so far. Sadly, this is also the only scenes I have due to multiples issues. I will still place sound/ narration on this video up to the point it stops, and try to perfect it as much as possible.

There are some timing issues which I plan to sort out over the next day, and some transitions that need a little more clarity.  This is more like a high spec pre-vis rather than a fully rendered version.

Reflective Statement

During the animation principles classes, we learnt the basics to making effective movement and motion. This included squash and stretch, timing, bounce etc. The joy of these principles is that they can be transitioned between both 2D and 3D platforms, learning them firstly in 2D was to gain a basic understanding. For the 2D program, we used Adobe animate. However, I found this program very difficult to use. Unlike photoshop, it doesn't have pressure sensitivity and learning the controls can very tricky. Sadly It is still not a program I would use by choice, and if I don't have to use it for lessons in the future, I probably won't again.

Saying that, what went well was the improvement of my animation from this program. Once I had given up on trying to make it perfect and started just using a sketchy appearance, I found that the animations had much more flow. this technique was also much less time consuming, meaning I was completing my work faster. Adobe Animate did make me very flustered as I found it a very difficult interface to understand, therefore allowing time and pressure to get the better of me. To move forward from these experiences is to try and have a break when feeling overwhelmed.

On a long term basis, these lessons (regardless of Animates awful interface) will be something I will continue to use thought my time at university, and hopefully there for after.

Tool Kit 1 Submission - Drawing

Year 1 Toolkit - Life Drawing by Kimberley Davis on Scribd

Drawing Reflective statement

Starting the drawing toolkit was quite daunting at first, this was mainly due to having only really done life drawing at home via Artmodeltips. I had done a few life drawing session at Sun Pier, but not many, and not with so many people.  One of the main points learnt from these lessons is understanding body proportions better. Although I had a small understanding, there was still a lot to learn. By continuous practise with a real life model, I could use perspective and guidelines to help improve. Taking measurement from the head down, and measuring correctly ensured the correct proportioning. Also, by taking angles and landmark help with foreshortening much more.

I noted over time that my drawings where becoming faster, and my confidence was growing with each session. So, as I have low self-esteem with my work, this was a much needed improvement. In terms of improvement, I need to gain a better comprehension of space on the page. It seems that a lot of my drawings ended up with feet or hands missing due to lack of space. A way to change this is maybe to draw a barrier around my page, and stop any drawings going over that line. Continuous improvement of measurements will help in this aspect.

Something to take forwards is not only page awareness, but loosening up. A goal for next year is to develop my own style, and try to add much more fluidness to my work. This in turn will give them more life, and will be a skill to add to my future animations.

Reflective Statement

When we started this academic year, maya was a completely new interface that's I had not really used before. Although I had seen a few online videos, actually using maya was quite unknown. Being eased in with making the Lego blocks and the car helped to show what Maya is capable, there for making it quite enjoyable. Over time, I have gotten a small handle on the program but there are still elements that will need to be gone over again. Though the lessons, projects and online tutorial, we had learnt the basic controls. Also, elements such as lighting, adding textures, modelling/ rigging/ skinning etc.

For myself, I felt that keeping on top of the tutorials went well. Doing this meant when it came to the WIM project, I had a good understanding on modeling.
Lighting seems to be quite a problem for me, also understanding frame rates to real time. To improve in the future, more practise and tutorials we help me gain the knowledge I need. Continuous practise with Maya over the summer holidays will ensure that I dont go rusty, an will help to learn new skills.

In terms of premiere and after effects, I know Premeire much more as I haven't used After Effects much. For my past animatics, they have turned out well and the controls have become much easier in Premiere.  Another goal to move forward with is to explore both of these programs ins much more detail. These programs are vital in making effective animations, and gaining an early handle on them will help me out int he long run.

Fantastic Voyage - Finalised Animatic with Voice Over

As the project continues to move forward, I have now completed the animatic with professional voice over artist - Donna Bayliss.  Working together with her was a absolute pleasure, and I hope to work with her in the future on other projects.
