Reflective Evaluation

For this project, the goal was to create a science based, 3 minute animation. This meant doing all the same things like in the previous assignments, such as researching, brainstorming, script writing etc. Only this time, we will have a fully rendered, 3d animation at the end. As this is more in depth, it meant really getting to understand maya and its supporting programs. Also, taking our details further into thinking about textures, lighting, ambience and style. For our script, if we required a voice over, we have to find a professional to give the script the edge its needs. This goes the same for the soundtrack. Anything we used had to be royalty-free and accredited.  Time management would be the key to succeed in this project.

Throughout the whole of this project, there has been a lot of ups and downs. Starting with a lot of highs, I found myself getting work done quite quickly and making a lot of process.  However, due to the usual situation that had risen, teaching moved to a online bases. Learning from home is not a problem, but it seemed that managing the software on my computer became increasingly difficult. Simple tasks ended up taking a lot longer than normal, and there was holes in my knowledge when it came to some of the required animations. When it came to placing my scenes together there was a lot of discrepancies, and my soundtrack did not seem to match the timing.,  Teaching staff was always online to help with problems which was nice, but it's seemed that the uncertainty of the climate and the difficulties with rendering/animating was taking quite a toll. There was days when I was thoroughly enjoying working, and others where even sitting at the computer desk was difficult, even though I always managed to. I found myself feeling quite lonely and frustrated at time, meaning work was even slower. Regardless of this, what was most important was people's safety and well being, and will continue to stay at home if needed.

If I was to do this project again, I would choose a different subject and make a simpler animation bases. My designs was much too complicated, and I had so much to make that it ate quite quickly into my time.  Trying to create a rig for the Rubik twist didn't work, but this did problem was easy to overcome. What I enjoyed the most and what I thought went the best was my animatic. It's quite detailed, and can stand as a 2d animation on its own. Plus, it was a great aid in directing what I made of my 3D playblasting. For the next coming months, I plan to have a short rest so to build back up my mentality. But then, I want to start learning at home to improve both on Maya and digital painting. This will make sure I don't get rusty before returning to university, and will make me much more prepared for the second year.

I have not placed the animatic and the animation together, this is due to differences with the 3D timing and the soundtrack. Over the summer, I may look in to finishing this animation, but there is currently very mixed emotions about this.
