There are two main ways to apply motion blur, this first is vai Maya Render view and the second it After Effects.
Maya
To apply motion blur in Maya, we have to go into the render setting itself and enable it under the motion blur tab. There are some option in this setting;
- Deformation: applies motion blur to objects that are skinned and deforming.
- Key: the frames which motion blur is working.
- Camera: Applies motion blur to the camera.
- Length: The length of the blur itself.
- Position: The frame the blur has been applied.
- Custom: allows a choice for which frame the blur starts and ends.

Adding the Motion Blur |
Motion blur in Maya requires some clean up, this is via the (AA)Camera in the render settings.
*Motion Blur in Maya is destructive! there for once rendered and saved out, the blur can not be removed to give a sharp image again*
After Effects
A non-destructive form of applying motion blur is via After Effects. Once the tiff images have been rendered and placed into AE, the Pixels Motion will give the desired effects.
However, After Effects cannot give the same accuracy as Maya. But, depending on how fast your object is moving, the difference in motion blur won't be noticeable.
